The PPGBA Board of Directors is requesting that the members vote at the January 17 general meeting to approve a dues increase for Active, Aspiring and Sustaining categories from $100 to $150 per year.

The Board is recommending this increase for two reasons:

1. To provide additional funding to bring in big name speakers 2-3 times per year. This will be a push to re-establish our group as the “go-to” group in the Bay Area, increase the value to our current members and also increase the value of our speaker seminars. Our hope is that this could help increase both our membership levels as well as additional income from visitor fees and seminar revenue.

2. reduce our deficit in the near term (make our reserves last longer).

While we think the increased value from the speakers alone is reason enough for this increase, we are proposing it from necessity. Our current membership levels combined with our current dues and other revenues (Seminars, Four Nights workshops, door fees) leave us about $10,000 per year short of our operating expenses. Our organization’s revenue has been less than our expenses for each year since 2008. We do watch our expenses very carefully, on a monthly basis, and the board does not find any area where our costs can be reduced further. We luckily had a good size reserve ($114k) in early 2009, but after four straight years of large losses, we realized we need to make a major change to halt this pattern so that we can continue to thrive into the future. If we’re able to increase membership and income from speakers, we could to stay at $150 membership rate well into the future. Otherwise, we are looking at needing to gradually increase to $200 per member in the next few years in order to remain solvent.

The board strongly believes that PPGBA membership continues to be a great value, at $150 or even $200 per year. Just one single idea learned from a monthly speaker or fellow member, can easily make or save the cost of the annual dues. With the added values of print competition, seminars and four nights programs, we hope that you also see the tremendous value that PPGBA has and that you’ll encourage friends in the industry to join our ranks.

About the Seminar

Secrets of Commercial Portraiture

The first thing we learn from this business is that there really are NO secrets in photography. What Dan CAN offer you are some great ideas on how he creates interesting photographs of people and makes his living at it.

From his New York studio, Dan serves commercial clients specializing in editorial, fashion, and lifestyle imagery. A major part of Dan’s business is photographing people for corporations, publications, and advertising agencies. Dan will share with you how he handles his commercial/editorial assignments and what is important to be successful in this specialty. He will also talk about getting you and your work noticed in that marketplace and how to find and bring in new clients. He will talk about finding your niche in the market and developing a plan to build your portfolio in a way that satisfies your needs and creativity.

Dan will discuss and demonstrate several of his successful lighting techniques from simple one-light setups to complex multi-light setups. We’ll have some live subjects on hand so that you can see him in action; bring your camera with you to this program! Dan will also cover his philosophy on posing and composition.

Dan’s eye for editorial photography gives him a different way of thinking and influences how he photographs seniors; he’ll show you what inspires him and how he uses it for senior clients. From his successful studio in Iowa, he photographs 50+ seniors per year and treats every session as a custom shoot. From the pre-session consultation through his way to handle session times, Dan will review his entire process from start to finish and how his senior sales average $1,800 per client using the perception of increased value and giving clients a choice during the sale.

Dan will also cover a simple, yet effective model program to help boost your business. If you are in a dreaded “creative rut,” Dan will go over ways to get you back to the roots of photography. Or, even if you are buzzing along, doing and feeling great, Dan will give you techniques to help you keep it that way.

Joe tells us. “One of my buddies and I were walking through downtown SF near the Transamerica Pyramid, getting some night shots when this bus stop with video ads and lighted signs caught my eye. I set up my gear to grab a quick bracket of the scene and then shot Toby in another capture while holding a flash triggered by a Pocket Wizard. The images were shot with a Canon 5D mkII with a 16-35mm lens (at 16mm) and were processed first in Nik HDR Efex Pro 2, cleaned up in Photoshop, and final adjustments made in Lightroom 4.” You can see more of Joe’s work at http://www.anvilimage.com

About the Seminar

This workshop will help you to find your very own best creative path and to more deeply embrace the exciting options available to you in the digital world. Brooke will share her insights about art vs. photography, discovering your personal style, sources of inspiration, and various ways to “read images.”

The class will be a mix of lecture, demonstrations, and hands-on. The day will begin with a presentation of “before and after” images as well as several guides to inspire you. Attendees will participate in some exercises to get their creative sparks going. Brooke will also talk about business issues and review how you can obtain gallery representation, how to print your images and edition them, as well as how to submit your work to various publications.

After the morning’s classroom session, there will be several different shooting demonstrations. Everyone will have a chance to step in and capture their own image for editing later. These demos will cover Brooke’s techniques of image compositing and combining multiple images to create the effects that have made her a sought-after artist. Attendees will learn about the camera settings that she prefers, composition and why she makes specific choices, and the significant importance of storytelling. She will show setups that involve levitation techniques, how to shoot “plates” for seamless edits, and using various props and elements to create a dynamic scene.

Two hours in the afternoon will be dedicated to editing techniques, where Brooke will post-process at least one of the images shot earlier in the day from start to finish. You’ll learn how she creates a seamless edit in post-production, as well as various ways to put your own creative stamp on what you’re editing. She will also show a series of previously completed images with Photoshop by peeling back the layers that went into creating the image.

Participants are encouraged to bring along a laptop in order for them to load their own shots taken earlier in the day. Brooke will do her own editing for a portion of the class, but participants are welcome to use their own images to practice on as she goes through her editing process.Brooke also encourages people to bring along a small printed portfolio if they would like portfolio reviews. At the end of the day she will leave some time for editing questions/portfolio reviews.

Participants are encouraged to bring a CAMERA, TRIPOD and LAPTOP, though the tripod and laptop are not required. If participants have a wireless remote, that will also be of use, but no other equipment is needed.

Brooke was born in March 1987 in Lancaster, PA, USA. She grew up near the “Amish Country” until attending Temple University. Brooke was photographically born in December 2008 after graduating from Temple with two degrees: film and English. She now resides in Los Angeles with her husband and three cats.

She began creating self-portraits for ease and to have full control over the images, and has since grown into a self-portrait artist. Self portraiture for her is not autobiographical in nature. Instead, she attempts to place herself within worlds she wishes we could live in, where secrets float out in the open, where the impossible becomes possible.

Brooke works to create new worlds within her photographic frame. By using painterly techniques as well as the square format, traditional photographic properties are replaced by otherworldly elements. Brooke’s photography questions the definition of what it means to be alive.
